What is the difference between broadloom carpet and carpet tile?

Broadloom is carpet woven or tufted in wide rolls, typically 12 or 15 feet, and cut and seamed to fit a room, which is what goes into most houses. Carpet tile is the same fibres built as modular squares, usually glued or friction-fit to the subfloor, mainly seen in offices and commercial spaces because a stained or damaged square can be pulled and swapped without touching the rest of the floor. Broadloom generally feels softer underfoot and suits bedrooms and living rooms; carpet tile trades some of that softness for easier spot repairs and heavier commercial traffic.
