How much is new carpet for an 800 square foot floor in Hamilton?
Between $3,300 and $6,000 for a mid-grade carpet, supply and install, before HST. Most homeowners in this city land around $4,500 on a job that size, which works out near $5.63 per square foot.
Why are stairs priced by the step instead of by the square foot?
Because each tread is measured, cut and wrapped by hand. Expect roughly $25 to $55 a step for carpet and labour together – a recent twelve-stair job in the region invoiced at $650 – and expect the higher end on the steep, narrow, winding staircases common in older Hamilton homes.
Is HST included in the ranges on this page?
No. Every figure here is before tax. Ontario’s HST is 13% and it applies to the carpet and to the installation labour on a supply-and-install job, so add it to whatever range fits your floor.
Does the price include taking the old carpet away?
Sometimes. Where removal is billed separately it runs about $0.70 to $1.50 per square foot. Some retailers fold it into a single installed rate instead, which is one reason two quotes for the same floor can look so different – ours says which of the two it is.
Can the final bill come in higher than the quote?
Not by much, and not quietly. An Ontario renovation business cannot charge more than 10% above the estimate it gave unless you ask for additional or different work in writing, and a deposit above 10% of the total is more than the province recommends.

How a competitor's rate compares
A retailer installing across Hamilton, Burlington and Niagara publishes $4.50 to $11.00 per square foot with an average sale near $5.50, folding carpet, basic installation, old-floor removal, standard furniture moving and stair labour into one rate. The two figures describe the same market from opposite ends, which is why a quote has to say what is inside the rate.

Subfloor and prep work
Old-floor removal $0.70 to $1.50 per sq ft where billed separately, an upgraded underpad $0.75 to $1.50, a basement moisture barrier $0.30 to $0.50, and subfloor preparation $1 to $2 per sq ft genuinely prepared.
Moving and transitions
Furniture moving is $50 to $200 flat, and transition strips run $15 to $40 a doorway. Not every job carries all of them; the quote says which apply to yours.
Repairs, priced by fault
$100 to $200 for a split seam, $150 to $275 for a patch, $200 to $450 for pet or water damage, and $1 to $2 per square foot to power stretch a rippled floor flat again.

Written agreement and deposit rules
A home renovation agreement worth more than $50 must be in writing, naming the work, materials, total cost with taxes and start/completion dates. A deposit above 10% of the total is more than Ontario recommends, and an agreement signed in your own home can be cancelled within ten days at no cost.
