When the work can happen
Hamilton’s Noise By-law 11-285 makes 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. the exempt period for construction, and prohibits construction noise that is clearly audible between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Condo buildings usually narrow that further to weekday business hours.
What to have ready when you get in touch
Rooms, sizes and stairs
The rooms, a rough size for each, the number of stairs including any winders at the turn, and what is on the floor now. A photo of the worst corner is worth more than a careful description.
Old floor and furniture
Whether the old carpet and underpad are staying or going, and whether furniture needs moving beyond the usual sofas and beds. Both are separate lines on a quote and easier to price before the day than during it.
Condo paperwork, flagged early
Most Ontario condo corporations want a written proposal to the board covering the work, materials, people and dates before a unit owner changes flooring, plus proof of liability and workers' compensation coverage. That paperwork takes longer than the carpet does.
What the written agreement will set out
What Ontario requires in the contract
The business name and contact details, a fair description of the work and materials, any warranty descriptions, the total cost including taxes, start and completion dates, anyone else working on it, and the payment schedule.
Disposal, settled in writing
The Carpet and Rug Institute advises settling who removes and disposes of the existing carpet and cushion before work starts. We put that on the quote in plain words so nobody argues about a pile of old broadloom on the day.
