A village that grew by two fifths in five years still has its original streets in the middle.
A town that grew fast
Waterdown added 4,040 people between 2016 and 2021, up 40.7 per cent to 23,858, so a large share of the houses here are barely a decade old and still on their first carpet.
The old core
Ebenezer Griffin had his land surveyed into village lots in 1830 and the post office opened in 1840, so the streets in the middle of town hold pre-Confederation houses beside new builds.

The Mill Street Heritage Conservation District, designated by By-law 96-34-H under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act, covers 130 private properties and is the largest of Hamilton's seven such districts.

Waterdown sits on the lip of the Niagara Escarpment east of Highway 6, with Grindstone Creek running through it, and it came under the City of Hamilton at amalgamation in 2001.
Waterdown is really two build eras under one name: new streets that went up fast in the last decade, and a village core around Mill Street that predates Confederation. Our house is only a few years old. Why has the carpet gone wavy already?
Almost always because the original fit was rushed. A carpet pulled in with a knee kicker rather than a power stretcher goes down flat and then relaxes, and the ripples show up a season or two later across the widest run of the room. The floor itself is usually fine; it needs pulling tight again.
Can the original builder carpet be kept and re-stretched instead of replaced?
Often, if the pile is still standing and the backing is sound. We look at the traffic lanes and the stairs first, because a carpet that is worn through at the nosings is not worth the labour of lifting and re-stretching.
What is under the carpet in a village house here?
Usually plank or board subfloor, sometimes with a layer or two of old covering still stuck down. We lift a corner at the measure so the quote reflects what is actually there rather than what we hope is there.

What shows up most in Waterdown's newer streets is not worn-out broadloom but badly fitted broadloom: ripples across a bedroom, a seam that has opened in a hallway, carpet pulling away from the tack strip at a doorway.

Time is allowed for lifting old flooring, refastening loose boards, and scribing the carpet to walls that wander, none of which shows up in a newer build.

How the work is done either way
New build or old village house, the method does not change. Fresh tack strip, underpad matched to the room, seams planned before the carpet is cut, and the floor pulled tight with a power stretcher so it stays where it was put. Stairs are measured tread by tread and wrapped over the nosing.
The fibre and the underpad together decide how the floor feels and how long it holds its look – something we talk through at the measure, with the room’s traffic in mind, rather than selling the heaviest sample in the case.

Waterdown grew by 40.7 per cent between 2016 and 2021, and a lot of those houses are now on their first carpet, still on the underpad it shipped with. Once that underpad has flattened, re-stretching the carpet on top of it only buys a little time.
We check the pad at the same visit as the carpet: if the pile is standing and the backing is sound but the pad underneath has gone flat, we replace the pad and re-stretch the broadloom over it rather than relaying the whole floor.
