Why do you measure Ancaster stairs one tread at a time?

Because a flight is rarely uniform. The Ontario Building Code allows a private stair a rise of 125 to 200 mm, a run of 210 to 355 mm and a tread depth of 235 to 355 mm, and a two-storey house often uses most of that range across one staircase, plus a winder or two at the turn.

What happens to the nosing on a carpeted stair?

It gets wrapped. The code asks for a rounded or bevelled nosing edge of 6 to 13 mm, and allows that to come down to 3 mm where a resilient covering runs over it, which is exactly what a carpeted tread is doing.

Is an older house near the village harder to carpet?

It takes longer rather than being harder. Older floors have been lifted before, so the tack strip is often tired, the subfloor moves in places and the room is rarely square. We allow for that at the measure instead of discovering it on install day.

How early can a crew start on a residential street here?

Hamilton’s noise by-law 11-285 treats 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. as the exempt period for construction and prohibits construction noise that is clearly audible between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. We work inside those hours and agree a start time with you.

Around the village, houses have had carpet lifted and relaid more than once. Old tack strip pulls the subfloor when it comes up, nail holes multiply along the perimeter, and rooms in a house of that age are seldom square, so we replace the strip rather than reusing it and plan the seams to run with the light instead of across a doorway.

Landings are the other thing an older Ancaster house springs on a fitter. A half-landing at a turn needs its own piece, cut so the pile runs the same way as the flight above and below it, or the join shows from the hall.

A Meadowlands staircase is the piece of carpet that decides how the whole floor looks, and it takes the longest to fit. We count every tread, riser and winder and measure the actual rise and run rather than assuming a standard flight, because the building code allows a wide range and builders use it.

We agree the stair finish, waterfall or cap-and-band, before the carpet is ordered, since the two use different amounts of material and cannot be swapped once the cutting has started.
